Each installment in the Classroom in a Book series features consistently well written and conceived lessons used in Adobe's official training and certification program. These books guarantee solid instruction, taking readers step by step through professional-level projects. Another fine tutorial-style book from the Adobe staff, this volume covers the latest version of Photoshop.

Although this cornucopia of tips, tricks, explanations, and experienced wisdom would be useful to any Photoshop user, those most likely to benefit, and benefit a lot, are graphic designers and others working on prepress production. From bit depth to monitor settings, gamut warnings, and file formats, this book faces all those nasty problems that designers often want the service bureau or printer to fix, but really should handle themselves (if they want to have the most control over how their artwork prints).

Photoshop 6 WOW! Book Photoshop 6 WOW! Book

This design cookbook now features nourishing meals along with its famous desserts. Most design professionals already own books in the Wow! series, and they're likely dog-eared from constant use. Authors Dayton and Davis have incorporated the latest changes in Photoshop 6 and added a lot of new material based upon readers' suggestions.

Although this is a series better suited to experienced users, Photoshop newbies will like the new opening chapter on fundamentals. Each of the subsequent chapters--color, retouching, compositing, using filters, painting, using type, and Web graphics and animation--also begins with a "Basics" section that goes over pertinent tools and issues. For example, the chapter on color begins by explaining adjustment layers, blending modes, color management, and other important topics. The remainder of each chapter is made up of techniques, from one to six pages long, each a recipe/tutorial showing how to cook up a Wow! effect.

Adobe Photoshop 6 for Photographers Adobe Photoshop 6 for Photographers

Adobe Photoshop 6.0 for Photographers focuses on the capabilities of Photoshop that are most useful to professional, particularly commercial, photographers. It's no cheesy production: with its crisp text and color images printed on heavyweight paper, and a companion CD-ROM with several substantial QuickTime movies, it's a beautiful way to learn.

The book is primarily a guide to using Photoshop as an effective photographer's tool. A substantial portion of the book is spent on digital image capturing, resolution, and color management. If you are at all unclear about the RGB workspace, but need to know the ins and outs of profiles, this book will definitely help. There's even a movie on the CD-ROM explaining the RGB, CMYK, and LAB spaces. Prepress proofing and outputting are also well covered.

Photoshop Restoration and Retouching Photoshop Restoration and Retouching

It's disappointing when a photo of a loved one is marred by "red eye" or the wrong exposure, or when a cherished picture from long ago cracks and fades. Luckily, Katrin Eismann seems to know every trick available in Photoshop for making photographs--film or digital--look just how you want them to, whether that means restoring what has been lost, fixing incorrect exposures, erasing dust and scratches, or even recreating reality. (Who wouldn't want to lose a few wrinkles?) Eismann has the artistic eye to appreciate good photography, the technical savvy to be able to offer numerous solutions to any given problem, and the writing and teaching skills to walk readers clearly through these solutions.

The book assumes readers have a working knowledge of Photoshop. It does not go through the basics or cover complex selections or masking, although it does quickly explain essentials like shortcuts, context-sensitive menus, quick image-navigation tricks, the varieties of layers, and smart file management--all issues that expedite workflow and distinguish regular and power users. The book even outlines what it takes to set up shop as a professional retoucher, discussing equipment, studio arrangement, and working with clients and contracts.

Barry Haynes, Apple pioneer and photographer with over a decade of experience working with digital images, has been using Photoshop since it was created. His work and experience shows in this latest addition to the Photoshop Artistry series. The writing is clear and thorough. Each section covers some aspect of Photoshop in detail, whether it's explaining formats like TIFF and PDF, gleaning information from histograms, or using levels and curves for color correction. Within the explanations are exercises set in bold type (with project files on the CD-ROM), giving the text the one-two punch of "learn" and "do."

In this well-organized, image-filled book, the author promises to show readers who have some computer experience but are new to digital photography (that is, neither computer neophytes nor professional photographers) how to take, touch up, edit, and publish digital pictures for the Web. As Lisa Lee puts it, "I start with a crash course about how to take a good picture, and then try to show off some basic and advanced tasks you can perform to create spiffy-looking Web-ready photographic images."

In a way, the whole book is a crash course--plenty of full-color screen shots accompanied by short but insightful explanations and step-by-step instructions that take you from opening screen to finished image quickly. Tips and cautions pop up frequently, and the pithy, concise text says a lot without taking up much space. For example, the author clearly and speedily explains why applying the sharpen filter to a blurry image won't make much of a visual change. And in just five pages, the section on image masks touches on RGB and alpha channels, the high pass filter, the magic wand and the lasso tools, and many keyboard shortcuts, as well as showing you a decent composited image. The discussions in the book are like recipes: you may not know why you should use baking soda rather than baking powder, but you'll eat a satisfying dish in the end.

"Valuable tips infest this book like locusts from some biblical plague! A must for any Photoshop hack."

I used to think I was a fairly good Photoshop user, but after reading this book, I've come to the conclusion that I'm a moron. This Scott Kelby guy is a genius. He knows Photoshop like a vampire knows a neck, and he attacks his subject with the same gusto. The information, nay, wisdom gushes out of this book like water through a fire hydrant. It's just good!

The best part about all this is that Kelby doesn't ever put on airs. He never says, "Oh, I am the Photoshop Lord, so let me tell you the sordid history of Photoshop and pontificate at length about my many graphics arts achievements" or any of that other malarkey that a lot of those so-called expert books regurgitate. Kelby is the humble master, offering the most amazing tricks and suggestions you would never think up yourself, and doing so in a tight, well-written manner. I mean, this book reads so well that it actually made me want to subscribe to the Photoshop User magazine he edits just to read more of his stuff.

Inside Adobe Photoshop 6 takes apart this massive image editor and breaks it down into bite-size pieces, making the program considerably more approachable for the new user and giving the experienced Photoshop artist a chance to see, in a nutshell, what's new.

If reading through nearly 1,000 pages of Photoshop tools, tricks, tips, and errata is your idea of a good time, Photoshop 6 for Windows Bible is the book to get. Packed with everything a new user needs to know about the leading image-editing application, this book has much to offer and only a few drawbacks.

Five main sections run the gamut from an introduction to the application and interface to basic and sophisticated painting, masking, layering, and text techniques. One of the most important sections is saved for last: "Color for Print and the Web." Color management and calibration for different output systems is never easy, but understanding how and why color is handled in Photoshop, and for different systems, will go a long way toward helping you become a real master.

Professional Photoshop 6: The Classic Guide to Color Correction Professional Photoshop 6: The Classic Guide to Color Correction

Plenty of books cover all things Photoshop, but Professional Photoshop 6: The Classic Guide to Color Correction is probably one of the few that ought to be required reading. Filled with clear text and color images, this new edition of the classic color usage guide stands out among its peers. Updated to reflect changes in Photoshop since the previous edition, nearly half the material is either new or has been rewritten. Color correction itself hasn't changed, but the way it's done and the need for doing it certainly have.

The book contains 17 chapters, each dealing with a different aspect of correction and image reproduction: colorspaces, resolution, luminosity, separation, channels, and much more. Each chapter is worthy of study, and all are interesting. While not a step-by-step tutorial guide, the text is written so that the driving idea behind each technique--in addition to a demonstration of it--is explained, allowing the reader to apply what is learned to his or her own work.

Ben Willmore's readers tell him that after reading his books, they "finally get Photoshop!" For this latest edition, once again he focuses on helping readers understand Photoshop rather than just leading them blindly through step-by-step projects. Looking at those techniques most useful to print and Web designers, and learning not just how to carry them out but the reasons behind each stage, readers will find out more than just which tool or filter does what. Once understanding is achieved, the author promises, creativity and efficiency levels soar.

This is not a special-effects cookbook, filled with chrome highlighting or other slick tricks, but it does show all the essential production techniques. For example, there are sections on color correcting, using creative effects like working with blending modes, and creating Web content like banners and animations. Nor is this a tutorial-based book that simulates a classroom at home, although the pages are rich with examples, screen shots, and professional-quality images that clearly mimic common Photoshop problems (like trying to silhouette strands of hair). And all sample images are on the CD-ROM for the hands-on experience of following along on the computer. In addition, the CD-ROM has bonus chapter supplements that show even more techniques.
